柔 (jū[2]) "yumuşak, zarif, esnek" + 道 (dō[1]) "yol, dō". Jigorō Kanō'nun jūjutsudan geliştirdiği modern, müsabık savaş sanatı. Jigorō Kanō Şubat 1882'de Tōkyō'da Eishō-ji (永昌寺) adlı Budist tapınağında kendi dōjōsunu açmıştır ve bu tarih jūdōnun kuruluş tarihi olarak kabul edilir.
Explanation:
柔 (jū[2]) "gentle, soft, flexible" + 道 (dō[1]) "way, path, dō". Modern, competitive art which Jigorō Kanō developed from jūjutsu. Jigorō Kanō opened his own dōjō in February 1882 in Eishō-ji (永昌寺), a Buddhist temple in Tōkyō, and this is accepted as the date of creation of jūdō.

Stephen Vlastos'un (1998, s. 169) aktardığına göre Jigorō Kanō, kendi öğrendiği branşlardan biri olan Kitō-ryū'ya (起倒流) Kitō jūdō da deniyordu ve Jigorō Kanō, geleneğe olan hürmeti sebebiyle yeni oluşturduğu sanatına geleneği yansıtan bir isim olarak jūdō ismini verdi. According to Stephen Vlastos (1998, p. 169), Kitō-ryū (起倒流), one of the branches that Jigorō Kanō learned, was also called Kitō jūdō, and Jigorō Kanō named his new art jūdō with the aim to respect and reflect the tradition in modern times. The reason why he didn't refer to the word jutsu is the militaristic connotations of that word.
