Bu kanji, iki kanjinin bir bileşimidir; 戈 ve 止. 戈 "bıçak" ve 止 "yürüme, durma". Bileşik bazen "bıçağı durdurma, savaşı durdurma" olarak yanlış yorumlanır, dolayısıyla bu'ya (武) pasifist bir nitelik atfedilir. Ancak dilbilimsel olarak, bileşik "bıçakla yürüme", dolayısıyla "seferde ordu" anlamına gelir. Bu yanlış yorumlamanın kaynağı Chǔ Zhuang Wang'dır (MÖ 6. yy.).
Note:
This kanji is a compound of two kanji; 戈 and 止. 戈 is "blade" and 止 is "walking, stopping". The compound is sometimes misinterpreted as "stoping the blade, stoping the war", hence bu (武) is attributed a pacifistic nature. But linguistically, the compound refers to "walking with blade", hence "army on expedition". The origin of this misinterpretation is Chǔ Zhuāng Wáng (6th century BC).
